Walls

the original Norse name for the area is Waas, derived from Vagar, meaning bays. This is the plural form of the Norse vagr, which has become Voe in Shetland usage.

the name also crops up in the Orkneyinga Saga, as Vagaland. The spelling of Walls is an invention of a (19th century) cartographer.

introduction

This is the Walls Community Website a.k.a. the Walls Wide Web. It was originally intended to be a source of information for the residents of Walls and the surrounding areas of Westside Shetland. However, gossip and posters at the Walls Shop, handwritten notices on posts and The Shetland Times seem to serve that purpose well. So, the site is just there now to show Walls to the World.

We hope that visitors, resident, ex-residents, and Shetlanders living in less sunnier parts of these islands, will find the site interesting.

All readers must feel free to make any suggestions about content. We would also be glad to consider any contributions from anyone, especially residents with old photos, nature items, information for crofters, histories, sales/service details, directory information, etc.

Contributions

All contributions should be via Brian or Kevin. They can be in any format you like; e-mails, html files, letters, scribbled notes, fivers or photos.

This photo, taken of Lotos in Vaila Sound in 2007, is here to fill the space. If you would like your picture to fill the space instead then let us have it. It has been established that this site is being reached via Google and has been seen all over the World...well, at least the the Isle of Wight. So this is your chance to get yourself published. We can cope with any digital image file, or could scan any printed photo or picture up to A4 size.
